Moving - El Paso vs Las Cruces

Main Post:

Hey everyone! I am making a move around March of next year to be closer to my husband. He lives in Mexico City right now, I live in Dallas, and we're really struggling with long distance. I really cant afford to visit as often as I would like. We are working on getting legal status for him, but realistically I think we'll be waiting until about 2028. After looking at various border town options, Juarez looks like the most feasible for us. I would live in El Paso or Las Cruces, and would visit as often as possible while still maintaining an individual social life. I don't mind a longer drive to the border, and would likely just leave my car in El Paso and walk across.

I am 26(f), out of school and working full time remote. Working remote in a new place can be pretty isolating, so I want to make sure I'm entering a decent social scene. I also prefer being up and out of my place on the weekends, so when I'm not in Juarez having enough to do is important. I don't really care much for nightlife. I love trying new restaurants, coffee shop, wineries, museums, and shopping local stores. I also like dancing, swing dancing specifically but western is a fine substitute if there isn't a scene. I'm also a fan of running and going to the gym. I don't love hiking solo, but could get behind it with a group of women. I do smoke, legal cannabis in NM is a huge bonus.

Locals- which town sounds like a better fit?

What are your thoughts on El Paso?

Main Post:

I saw someone asked this question two years ago. I'm curious what Texans think of El Paso now in 2024.

(Please try to maintain respect and consideration even if you're not a fan of the city.)

When the Texas power grid fails, the lights stay on in El Paso.

ANyone here absolutely hated El Paso and actually built up the courage to move?

Main Post:

I'm a relatively young person attending college In El Paso and I absolutely despise the city. It has atrocious air quality (particularly in the area that I'm in) and there is literally nothing to do but eat and drink here. The only saving grace is that the people are incredibly amicable. I was thinking of moving to Boulder, and was wondering if the grass is actually greener on that side. Any thoughts?

Have you tried fitness classes, recreational sports or hobbiest groups?

What about getting involved in the local indie music/art/comedy/theatre/film scenes?

Moving isn’t going to fix your boredom if you’re not willing to put yourself out there. 90% of what people do in other cities are go to bars and restaurants.

What is El Paso like?

Main Post:

I currently live in Fort Worth and am trying to decide if we want to stay in Texas and just move to a different city. I have driven by El Paso on road trips but don’t know much else about it.

It's very different from DFW. I would recommend taking an extended vacation out there to see if you even like it.

What do y’all think of El Paso?

Just wondering because it is the major city that doesn’t get much attention

An extremely underated city. Im not saying its the best city, im not even saying its a good city, just that it is underated, many people put it in the same category as Lubbock lol. Its different from the rest of Texas, but still very Texan, the Tejano culture is strong here. Its a college town and a military town which creates a pretty cool culture, you get to meet people from all over. Its the only Texan city with mountains, and the mountain is literally right in the middle of the city which creates a pretty cool landscape and a cool culture. Its nice to go hiking in protected land but have the city all round you, its beautiful. And its a very unique city because we are literally feet away from New Mexico and from Juarez Mexico. Juarez, despite its reputation, is still one of the major Mexican cities so they get the biggest latin artists and they have major league soccer, and world class restaurants, shopping, and bars. A few hours north for weekend getaways is the biggest lake in New Mexico, white sands, gila national forest, and the Sacramento mountains for camping or skiing. The city itself is consistently among the top 5 safest big cities in the country, we have minor league baseball and soccer, the best mexican food in the country, and it is a city that is growing, we are poor, but we are improving, not dying like many cities in the midwest. And even though we are growing a lot, it is still one of the most affordable. Overall, I love El Paso

I'm not saying it's the best city in the state, I'm not even saying it's a good city, all I'm saying is it's underrated because everyone talks about it as if it was lubbock. The mountain in the middle of the city, its unique culture, and Juarez and New Mexico literally feet away make it a very interesting and fun city
